Health and Prevention in Costa Rica

Costa Rica has excellent emergency and health care services. You can read more at Healthcare in Costa Rica and Costa Rica Healthcare: Tips for Tourists and Expats.  A group travel insurance plan is purchased for each team member (Missionary Health Insurance).

Routine immunizations should be up to date. Additional vaccinations are not required but some are recommended. (CDC information on CR).

All types of bugs and mosquitoes thrive in Costa Rica. Bug spray and anti-itch cream are a must! According to the CDC, using insect repellent is the best way to prevent diseases like Zika, dengue, and chikungunya and other illnesses spread by mosquitos.

Dress Code

When working with Costa Rican school aged children and youth during school hours. Costa Rican students wear uniforms. Schools dictate what visitors should wear when volunteering at their facilities. When ministering in schools, we must wear jeans, khakis or capris, close-toed shoes and plain shirts. When not in school teens tend to wear jeans, skirts, t-shirts and polos. Shorts are typically worn to athletic events, but it is becoming more popular to wear them (modestly, i.e. capris, khakis, and jeans for in-school ministry days).  A packing list is provided in the Costa RIca Trip Manual.
